New York’s Bravest Union Announces Endorsements
The Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA) announced a wide range of bipartisan political endorsements in elections across New York, including races for the U.S. House of Representatives, New York State Senate and State Assembly. “Public Safety is the top priority for New York City Firefighters and first responders in cities and towns all across our state. The UFA is absolutely committed to supporting candidates who are willing to fight in order to maintain the security of our communities,” said UFA President Steve Cassidy. “The last dozen years have been the busiest in the 149 year history of the FDNY, with emergency calls rising 12.3 percent. Over that period of time, New York’s Bravest' responded to more than 5.7 million civilian calls for help. Our firefighters and the citizens we are sworn to protect rely on the support of our dedicated elected officials.” “The candidates our union and its firefighters are endorsing represent a bipartisan cross-section of leaders in the House of Representatives, State Senate and State Assembly. Regardless of party, we will support candidates who support us,” said Jim Slevin, UFA Vice President and Legislative Director. “As New York’s population has grown, as development across our cities and state expands, we need to be dedicating the proper resources necessary for protecting citizens from all types of emergencies, be that fires, medical emergencies or terror threats.” New York City Firefighters respond to a wide range of emergencies including fires, manmade and natural disasters, explosions, train derailments, ferry and boat accidents, gas leaks, scaffolding rescues, serious vehicle accidents and extractions, medical emergencies and terror threats. Firefighters are also trained as New York City’s first line of defense to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats (CBRN). The UFA is the largest firefighters union local in the world, representing New York City Firefighters, Fire Marshals, Marine Engineers, Pilots and Wipers.
