Statement from UFA President Gerard Fitzgerald on Janus Decision
NEW YORK CITY – Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA) President Gerard Fitzgerald issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision in Janus v. AFSCME Council 31:
“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court is a significant setback for all union members, including our men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line every day to keep the citizens of New York safe. The right to organize empowers all working people to improve their lives and the lives of their loved ones. This decision only makes it more difficult for every union family to join together and get the healthcare, wages and dignity they deserve on the job.
While today’s ruling may ignore the value of unions to hardworking families, the UFA will never stop organizing to protect the health, safety and interests of New York City Firefighters and the citizens they keep out of harm’s way. We stand with our fellow brothers and sisters in labor and will always fight for the rights of our members.”
