Health & Safety: Safety Messages

65-2 #09 January 27, 2006

UFA Health and Safety Officer / Sergeant-at-Arms Bill Romaka wishes to remind the Membership to take their safety responsibilities seriously at all times. We will continue to highlight and remind our members of "safe actions" as spelled out by the Department. Stay well, and stay safe!

The FDNY Regulations, Chapter 11, "Fire and Emergency Operations" state the following:

11.1 Preliminary Duties and Response

...11.1.11 Members shall exercise care to avoid injury when boarding and riding apparatus. Donning of boots and fire clothing should be done prior to boarding apparatus. Members riding apparatus shall use hand rails, hand straps and safety belts, when such are provided.

Officers in command of apparatus when responding shall cautiously move the apparatus into streets or thoroughfares until traffic is stopped and it is safe to proceed. Apparatus shall then be brought to a complete halt in order to permit members to board safely.

***Please refer to FDNY Regulations Chapter 11 to familiarize yourself with its full content. The penalties for violating the Regulations can be severe. Please remember to exercise and practice applicable safety rules and regulations to protect your health as well as your job.
