Hero Firefighter Helps Save Newborn Baby Girl In Brooklyn - On His Birthday!

NY Daily News - December 27, 2010

A hero firefighter shares a birthday with the newborn baby girl he helped save from respiratory and cardiac arrest in Brooklyn on Sunday.

Joseph Costa, 30, of Engine 202 in Red Hook, responding to a 911 call around 4:45 p.m. for an unresponsive newborn, rushed to the mother's Carroll Gardens home on Henry St.

Costa found the woman kneeling over the infant delivered at home. "She was on her hands and knees trying to talk to the baby," Costa said. "She was willing the baby to life."

EMTs Agatha Rivera and James Byrne joined Costa in working on the baby before taking her to Long Island Jewish Hospital, authorities said.

Costa, whose birthday was yesterday, waited at the hospital until the newborn stabilized.

"It was scary," he said. "This turned out to be a good birthday present."
