Firefighter Fitzroy Haines, a 9/11 first responder, died while off duty Sunday after suffering a heart attack, his family and officials said.
Haines, 40, was taken from his home in Marine Park, Brooklyn, about 3:45 p.m. to the Kings Highway Division of Beth Israel Medical Center, where he was declared dead.
He recounted the horrors of 9/11 in a 2002 interview with the World Trade Center task force.
"The only thing I was doing was just counting the bodies that were jumping," he said.
Haines joined the Fire Department in February 2001 and was part of Ladder 15 in Manhattan. Before that, he served six years as a Marine, his family said. "For a short life, he had a good life," said Haines' father, Fitzroy Haines Sr. of Palm Bay, Fla. "He loved being a fireman."
