The Silver Shield Foundation has donated scholarship money to the children of a fallen FDNY lieutenant and a Suffolk County police officer.

Lt. Robert Ryan, 46, was killed last Nov. 23 when a roof collapsed on him during a fire on Staten Island. His two children, who are 11 and 17, will receive $20,000 for tuition, tutoring and other related costs.

Suffolk County Police Officer Glen Ciano, 45, was killed in February after a drunken driver crashed into his patrol car. His two children, who are 19 and 21, will also receive $20,000 for educational costs.

The Silver Shield Foundation was established by New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.

Fewer firefighters hurt

Burn injuries for city firefighters dropped by 29% over last year according to statistics released by the Fire Department of New York.

There were 252 injuries in fiscal year 2009, down from 354 in fiscal year 2008.

Fire Department officials credited the drop to a new safety initiative designed to reduce job-related injuries.
