Surfer Dies in Queens

Associated Press - November 13, 2009

A 36-year-old man surfing off Rockaway Beach in Queens died on Thursday after getting caught in pounding surf churned up by a passing tropical storm, the authorities said.

A Fire Department spokesman said that two firefighters responding to an emergency call pulled the man out of the water.

Emergency medical technicians tried to revive the surfer, but he was pronounced dead at a local hospital. His name was not immediately released.

The spokesman said it appeared that the man had been in the water alone when a leg strap that tethered his surfboard to his ankle became tangled, and rough surf pushed him toward a jetty.
