Man Charged In Westchester Square Fire

NY 1 - September 23, 2009

A Bronx man was arrested Tuesday in connection with a fire that destroyed a row of stores back in March. Fire officials say William Crean, 40, is charged with second degree arson and reckless endangerment.

The charges carry a penalty of up to 25 years in prison.

Investigators say the fire in Westchester Square spread quickly because the row of businesses shared a common attic.

It took 140 firefighters and nearly three hours to bring the fire under control.

Seven businesses were destroyed.

The property damage was estimated at $2 million.
