Fire Destroys Bronx Mosque That Held Notable Funerals

Associated Press - September 19, 2009

A fire has destroyed a mosque in the Bronx where funerals were held in 2007 for nine children and a woman who died in one of the city's deadliest blazes.

Fire marshals on Friday were investigating the cause of the fire that destroyed a building that housed the Islamic Cultural Center in the Bronx. The fire is not considered suspicious.

Muslim leader Sheikh Moussa Drammeh says they intend to rebuild. Fire spokesman Steve Ritea says the building in the Morrisania section was "heavily damaged."

He says marshals were looking into electrical work being done in the basement of the mosque before the fire swept through the building on Thursday night.

The mosque became a gathering place as the community mourned the 10 family members killed in a blaze two years ago.
