Defaced NYC 9/11 Mural Is Restored

Associated Press - September 09, 2009

NEW YORK (AP) - An artist has restored a New York City 9/11 mural that was defaced with graffiti.

It took more than a year to painstakingly repair the mural. It's on a wall near the Bronx home of Firefighter Peter Bielfeld, who died at the World Trade Center.

A teenager was arrested and has since apologized for vandalizing the mural in May, 2008. The graffiti obliterated the image of the firefighter's face.

The original work was by artist Eddie Gonzalez. The restoration was completed by John Cohen of Queens.

The New York Police Department's 49th Precinct supplied the art materials.
