COVID-19 Death Benefit Bill Passes - May 31, 2020

After passing in both Houses, S.8427/A.10528, has been officially signed into law today by New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo establishing a COVID-19 public employee death benefit for the families of frontline workers who died in the line of duty in COVID-19 response efforts.

The UFA has fought for the passage of this bill and is incredibly thankful for the tireless efforts of our lawyers, namely Jennifer Bentley, Michael Block and Paul Linzer, and the countless hours they have spent for their work with this bill. This pandemic has taken the lives of so many essential workers who died battling the virus while protecting and serving others. While the UFA has been fortunate to have not lost any of our members during this time, the passing of this bill ensures that the families of those heroes who were lost, and those heroes that should succumb to the COVID-19 disease in the future, are provided for.

We would also like to thank the membership for the overwhelming responses garnered in our push for a Digital Lobby Day. Your tremendous efforts resulted in direct contact from over 80% of the Senators, Assembly Members and City Council Members that we reached out to. Your voices were heard and our messages were made clear. Vice President Bobby Eustace has personally spoken to these elected officials, whether it be via phone calls, texts or emails, to advocate for the rights UFA members deserve.

With such crucial legislation on the line protecting the rights of our members and their families, along with all the state and local employees working in the face of COVID-19, these efforts speak volumes, especially in times like these.
