One man was injured when a fire swept through a Stuyvesant Town apartment on Manhattan’s East Side Thursday afternoon, fire officials said.
The injured man was said to have been covered in soot and suffering from smoke inhalation, when EMTs assessed him. He was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Hospital Center for treatment, fire officials said.
The blaze broke out shortly after 3:30 p.m. at 610 East 20th St. in apartment 7B. Firefighters raced to the scene to find fire blowing from two bedroom windows and when they entered the lobby, they found the occupant suffering from smoke inhalation, but with non-life threatening injuries, fire officials said.
The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes, but by then the apartment had suffered heavy damage.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known and was under investigation by fire marshals.
