Manhole Fire Shuts 2nd Ave in Midtown, Hurts 1

Lanes were closed on Second Avenue between 34th and 42nd streets due to the fire.

MURRAY HILL, NY — Multiple manholes went up in flames on Second Avenue Friday morning, shutting down eight blocks along the avenue, officials said.

All lanes of traffic were closed along Second Avenue between 34th and 42nd streets, NYC Emergency Management wrote on Twitter about 8:40 a.m. Lanes were re-opened about 10 a.m., NYCEM's notification system tweeted.

Firefighters rushed to the corner of Second Avenue and East 36th Street just after 8 a.m. after hearing that a manhole had caught fire, an FDNY spokesman said. The injured person was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center. The spokesman did not have details about the person's condition.

ConEdison was on their way to the manhole fire around 8:45 a.m.
