STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A worker was taken to the hospital following exposure to a chemical at the city Department of Environmental Protection water-treatment facility in Oakwood on Tuesday morning.

“The employee was treated and released from the hospital and is returning to work,” said a spokesman for the DEP around noon on Tuesday.

Earlier, the DEP released the following statement:

“At approximately 7:30 a.m., an employee at the Oakwood Beach Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility came in contact with a chemical substance. That individual has been transported to an area hospital for further evaluation and treatment.”

The call was made at about 7:57 a.m. at the facility at 751 Mill Road, according to a spokesman for the FDNY.

A person with minor injuries was taken to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze, the spokesman said.
