WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN — A worker is in critical condition after falling down a 10-foot shaft on Richardson Street on Friday morning, fire officials said.

FDNY was called to 19 Richardson Street just before 9 a.m. to help a person who had fallen down a shaft at a worksite, an FDNY spokesman said. The crews were able to get the person out quickly and they were taken to Bellevue Hospital Center.

The spokesman did not have details about what kind of work was being done at the site, but said the person was a worker on the property. The worker is in critical condition, the spokesman said.

The worker is one of several accidents in recent weeks in the city, including previous fatalities that have caused elected officials and activists to call for reform.

Last Month, Erik Mendoza was working on a construction site at the 1 Pierrepont St. building when he fell 13 stories, according to police and the fundraiser. A week earlier, 34-year-old Gregory Echevarria was killed when a crane counterweight fell on him at a construction site at 570 Broome Street. Another worker was killed by falling debris at a Turtle Bay construction site a few days before Mendoza died.
