NY 1 - May 11, 2019

NEW YORK - An elderly woman is dead after an apartment fire early Friday morning on the Upper East Side.

Firefighters were called just before 6 a.m. to a five-story apartment building located at 1760 First Avenue.

The fire was burning on the third floor of the building.

An 86-year-old woman was found in the bathroom after firefighters put out the fire.

The fire department says the flames did not spread beyond the apartment.

"Difficult to put into perspective but not a large fire, contained to the apartment. Thankfully there was no extension into any other apartments or into any of the shafts of the building," said FDNY Deputy Chief Nicholas Corrado.

The victim has not yet been identified.

No one else was hurt.

Investigators are stilling trying to figure out what caused the fire.
