The FDNY received a call about a fire at 900 Baychester Ave., in Co-op City, around 10:15 a.m. Saturday.
Firefighters rescued a family, including a child, from a burning apartment building in the Bronx on Saturday morning, officials said.
One person was critically injured and three others were in serious condition after the fire on Baychester Avenue in Co-op City, the FDNY said.
The fire was contained on the fifth floor of the 24-story building, the FDNY said.
The heavy smoke made for "complete lights out conditions," FDNY Capt. Theodore Conroy said.
Firefighters found and rescued four people, including an unconscious boy lying next to a bathtub, the FDNY said.
Firefighter Joseph Aviles recounted finding the boy. "As I’m searching and come upon something that feels like a body, that’s when I realize it was a child," he said.
"I grab the child and I carried him down to the third floor where I started CPR," Aviles said. "I did a few cycles and picked him up and carried him into the street where I continued CPR until EMS came."
Firefighters had gotten the blaze under control within a half hour, according to the department.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
