Midtown Fire Breaks Out in High-Rise Basement, FDNY Says

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — A portion of West 42nd Street near Port Authority was shut down Tuesday afternoon as firefighters responded to a blaze in the basement of a high-rise building, an FDNY spokeswoman said.

A fire broke out in the basement of the McGraw Hill Building at 330 W. 42nd St. — located between Eighth and Ninth avenues — shortly before 4 p.m., an FDNY spokeswoman said. Firefighters responding to the scene reporter heavy smoke in the building's basement, the spokeswoman said.

Nobody was injured during the fire, an FDNY spokeswoman said. A large emergency response was seen on West 42nd Street.

The fire was placed under control around 4:50 p.m., fire officials said.
