Two people are dead following an early morning fire Wednesday at a Brooklyn apartment building.
Flames broke out around 2 a.m. on the sixth floor of the building on 529 East 22nd Street in Ditmas Park.
Crews say it took over an hour to get the blaze under control because of heavy clutter.
The victims, a 59-year-old woman and her 36-year-old son, were transported to Kings County Hospital where they were pronounced dead.
People driving nearby said the smell of the smoke was overwhelming.
"I was on 911 and they were telling me there was a fire several blocks down, maybe it's from that. And I was like what that can't be possible. So I made my way here and the whole way from Coney Island to here, which is like 15 blocks," said one witness at the scene.
The FDNY says it appears the fire started in a trash can in the hallway before spreading to the apartment.
The cause remains under investigation.
