GLENDALE, QUEENS -- An 11-year-old boy playing on a frozen Queens pond with his friend has died after he fell through the ice into frigid water on Tuesday, authorities said.
Anthony Perez had walked onto Strack Pond in Forest Park with his friend when the ice suddenly broke beneath them at around 4 p.m., police told Patch.
One 12-year-old boy managed to escape the frigid pond and ran home to tell his mother, who dialed 911 for help, an NYPD spokesman said.
Both firefighters and cops responded to the pond near Forest Park Drive and Woodhaven Boulevard in Woodhaven.
Divers spotted Perez submerged in the pond and were able to pull him to shore, but he'd already been underwater for several minutes and wasn't breathing, an FDNY spokeswoman said.
Firefighters performed CPR on the unconscious boy before medics rushed him in critical condition to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
