NY 1 - December 29, 2012
The Uniformed Firefighters Association said by New Year's Eve it's estimated that firefighters will have responded to more than 495,000 emergencies this year. That would make it the second busiest year ever behind 2010, when more than 507,000 calls were answered.
UFA President Steve Cassidy said Hurricane Sandy played a role in this year's numbers, as well as an expansion of firefighters' responsibilities.
They respond to everything from natural disasters to gas leaks, building collapses and serious car accidents.
Firefighters are also the city's first line of defense against chemical, radiological, biological and nuclear threats.
