NY 1 - December 23, 2011It's going to be a long road to recovery for one of the firefighters badly burned during a two-alarm fire in Brooklyn.
Firefighter Robert Wiedmann suffered second and third-degree burns over 50 percent of his body in Monday's fire, and doctors said Thursday he will need several operations before he can go back to work.
"As I told the family, we anticipate that he'll be here at least six to eight weeks, and probably will need at least one operation a week," said Dr. Roger Yurt of the Weill-Cornell Burn Center.
"We would just ask everyone to keep Robert in your thoughts and prayers as well as Jimmy. These are truly two of the bravest and greatest firemen I know," said Douglas Weidmann, Robert's brother.
Firefighter James Gersbeck was able to escape down the stairs.
Wiedmann's family is asking volunteers to donate blood to assist him in the surgeries.
