Cornell Firefighter Study is Underway
The School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) at Cornell University has offered to do an independent study, pro bono, examining the work, well being, and quality of life of New York City Firefighters. It has been arranged at the request of the UFA Health and Safety Office, and is independent of the Department. It will focus on numerous issues of concern about firefighters including work-family conflict, stress, trauma, substance abuse, peer support, communication, relations at work, and workplace culture. While conducting the study against the backdrop of the trauma of Sept. 11, the study and survey will go beyond measuring effects of this specific event and try to give a broad picture of our working life both before and after the tragedy. It will measure the progress of the union and management at addressing members’ concerns and needs. The study will survey several thousand Firefighters. More info to follow.

Update Provided for LODD Committee
In keeping with the constitutional amendment the delegate body adopted last April, the Line-of-Duty Death Committee formulated bylaws that send NYC Firefighters to visit other cities and help memorialize LOD firefighter deaths. Expenses will be covered for two members to travel to services within the United States and Canada for IAFF members who make the supreme sacrifice. Member selections are made on a rotating basis from each firehouse, BFI unit and Marine Co. to attend IAFF line-of-duty funerals. This is our way of showing our appreciation for all those who traveled to our memorials and services in the days and months after Sept. 11, 2001. Specific information and bylaws will be provided in writing for all Company Delegates.

The show, which will be shot in mid-December in New York, is seeking "high energy, even flamboyant, larger than life people with a flair for cooking." If you want to put Police Officers to shame, the show will give you and a cooking partner an entree item selection and $20 to shop. In less than two hours, you must buy the ingredients and finish cooking. The winning pair will get a gift certificate and national exposure. The first part of the show will be a taped bio of the contestants at home, at work or in the kitchen; the second part is the competition. Send your inquiries to foodfight@pipeline.com or call 212-581-3747 and leave a message.
