Statement from UFA President Gerard Fitzgerald
on the Passing of Firefighter William Gormley

NEW YORK CITY – Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA) President Gerard Fitzgerald issued the following statement following the death of Ret. FF William Gormley from 9-11-related cancer:

“Today we mourn the death of one of New York City’s bravest. Earlier this week, we lost one of our brothers due to cancer caused by Ret. FF William Gormley’s service at the World Trade Center site following the 9-11 attacks.

William, who retired from Ladder 174 in Brooklyn, passed away on Tuesday.

Gormley is the ninth firefighter who has passed away due to a 9-11 related illness this year.

The 9-11 attacks on our country claimed the lives of 343 FDNY firefighters, paramedics and personnel that day and many more have fallen sick and passed away in the aftermath from breathing in the toxic air at the World Trade Center during rescue and recovery efforts.

Ret. FF Gormley’s death is a painful reminder that New York City Firefighters and other first responders continue to suffer from the aftermaths of 9-11. More than 15 years after the tragic event, 131 firefighters and fire officers have passed away due to 9-11-related illnesses.

His funeral will take place on Wednesday, June 21 at 11 am in Brooklyn, NY.

On behalf of the UFA Executive Board and the entire union membership, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and to those he served with.”
