UFA Safety Message #7

UFA Health & Safety Officer/Sergeant-at-Arms Bill Romaka wishes to remind the Membership to take their safety responsibilities seriously at all times. We will continue to highlight and remind our members of "safe actions" as spelled out by the Department. Stay well, and stay safe!

The FDNY Safety Bulletin #71, "Reducing Apparatus Accidents" states the following:

2. Responsibility

2.1 The Fire Department not only has the responsibility of protecting lives and property, it also has the responsibility to prevent death or injury from vehicular accidents caused by our vehicles. Our members also have the right to expect protection from injury and death from a traffic accident.

2.2 Careful analysis of accidents involving fire apparatus has revealed common causes of apparatus accidents:

1. excessive speed.
2. failure to stop at controlled intersections.
3. over reliance on emergency lights and sirens.
4. unsafe backing of apparatus.

**Please refer to the full Safety Bulletin #71 and familiarize yourself with its content. Also, please take the time to review previous Safety Messages as safety is an ongoing and top priority
