Scholarships for FDNY Members & Family


1. FDNY Organization Scholarships

  • The 2017 UFA Scholarship Fund Deadline has passed. 2018 information will be posted HERE.

Dependent children of active, retired, or deceased Firefighters, Fire Marshals, or Marine Wipers who are full-time students, and active UFA members and their spouses are eligible to apply for scholarship awards for UNDERGRADUATE education.

Dependent children and spouses of LOD deceased UFA members, and dependent children of non-LOD deceased UFA members are also eligible to receive scholarship awards also for UNDERGRADUATE education.

  • FDNY Columbia Association
Applications for eligible family members of the Columbia Association are being accepted for Private or Public High School and College Awards as follows: Candidates for College Awards (12th Grade Students) Submit applications, along with a copy of the Candidate's SAT scores, before April 1, 2018. These tests must be taken in the candidates' junior or senior year of high school between September, 2016 and March, 2018. This must be the candidates' graduating year. Candidates for High School Awards (8th Grade Students) Submit applications before March 1, 2018. The STS Closed High School Placement test will be given on March 4, 2018, at 1000 hours at the Fire Academy. Eligibility: Candidates for these awards may compete if a parent (natural, step or foster) is a member in good standing of the Columbia Association. Children of deceased members who were in good standing at time of death may also compete. Grandchildren are not eligible.   • FDNY Emerald Society Annual Scholarship Exam
Open to sons and daughters, brothers and sisters of Emerald Society members in good standing. Always takes place the 1st Saturday in March. Application: www.fdnyemerald.com or Dispatcher William P. Treanor, 98 Bay Street, Bronx, NY 10464.

  • FDNY Holy Name Society H.S. Scholarship
Available for Manhattan, Bronx, and Staten Island. The Holy Name Society always holds their H.S. Scholarship Test the first Saturday in December. Available to 8th graders, who are sons and daughters, brothers, sisters & grandchildren of Holy Name Society members in good standing (including deceased members).   • FDNY St. George Association Annual Scholarship Exam
Open to the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of FDNY St. George Association members in good standing. For info call Scholarship Chairman Harvey Modor at 718-465-6405.

  • FDNY Vikings Association
Available for family member of a member in good standing of the Vikings in a tuition paying H.S., college, technical school. Applications may be obtained online: www.fdnyvikings.org.

  • Fire Bell Club Scholarship Award Application
Applications for the Fire Bell Club Scholarship Award are now available. Eligibility is as follows: Active Firefighters and Fire Officers who have been accepted or are attending an accredited institution of higher learning. Firefighters/Fire Officers pursuing a degree in Fire Service Administration, Public Service Management, Nursing or a related Fire Service discipline and who have completed a minimum of twelve credits. A written statement of 500 words explaining why an applicant should be considered for the award is also required. Applications can be obtained by emailing Jacqueline Merveil, FDNY Registrar/Academic Advisor at jacqueline.merveil@fdny.nyc.gov or by calling (718) 281-8465.

In memory of FF Michael Kiefer grant awards are being offered to active members of FDNY Uniformed Force. 2. Memorial Scholarships

  • A-Team Scholarship
In memory of Lt. Joseph Cavalieri, FF Christopher Bopp, and FF James Bohan the scholarship is open to any child of an active or retired member of the UFA or UFOA entering a private H.S.   • BC Matthew Ryan Memorial Scholarships

BC Matthew Ryan Memorial Scholarships are named to honor the fallen Chief who made the supreme sacrifice on September 11, 2001. Two (2) one thousand dollar scholarships are awarded annually and can be used for college/university, high school, trade school or private school.

    Applicants must meet both the following criteria:
  • Must be the daughter or son of an active, retired or deceased (both line of duty and non-line of duty) member of the Fire Department.
  • The Firefighter (not the student) must be an active, retired or deceased member who played hockey on FDNY, Firehouse, Town, Local, or League hockey team.

  • FF Michael Lynch Memorial Foundation Scholarship
Scholarships are available to children of FDNY members, victims of 9/11, and other fires and disasters in NYC. For more info, including applications, visit www.mlynch.org.

  • FF Thomas Brick Memorial College Scholarships
In memory of FF Thomas Brick, scholarships are available to all active FDNY Firefighters & Officers. To apply, complete & return an application to Chief of Department Kilduff. Applications are available on the FDNY Intranet or by calling Katherine McGuire (718) 999-0743.

  • James B. Boylan Scholarship Award
Applications for the annual James B. Boylan Scholarship Award are now available and can be obtained via email to Mr. Robert Gullickson at rjgullickson@gmail.com. Eligibility is as follows: This scholarship is offered to children of Firefighters/Fire Officers (active and retired) entering a Catholic High School on Staten Island.   • Lt. John M. Clancy/FF Jimmy O'Shea Memorial Scholarship

  • NYS Honorary Fire Chiefs College Scholarship
Applications for the NYS Honorary Fire Chiefs Memorial College Scholarships are now being accepted. Two scholarships each worth $2,500 will be awarded. The scholarship is open to all active UFA members who are currently enrolled in college (2018). Applicants must submit a letter explaining why they are deserving of this scholarship (i.e. seeking credits for promotion, completing courses toward a degree, etc.); in addition to the college you are attending. Please include a cover sheet with your name, assigned company, work location (if different) & contact information. Due by May 25, 2018.   • NYS Honorary Fire Chiefs and NYSPFF 2018 Ted Green Memorial College Scholarships
Applications for the NYS Honorary Fire Chiefs and NYS Professional Firefighters 2018 Ted Green Memorial College Scholarships are now available. Postmark deadline to submit application is May 18, 2018. Submit all information to: NYS Professional Firefighters Association, 174 Washington Ave., Albany, NY, 12210.
Eligibility: The scholarship competition is open to high school seniors and recent high school graduates who will not have completed more than one year of college by September 2018. Applicant must not have graduated from high school before 2017. Applicant must be a child of an active uniformed union member of the NYS Professional Firefighters Association. Members of the Executive Board or employees of the NYS Professional Firefighters Association or their children are not eligible.
Announcement of Winners: Scholarship winners will be announced at the IAFF 1st District Partnership Education Program in White Plains, NY, June 25-27, 2018.
Awards: Awards are made when the recipient has registered at an accredited undergraduate college as a full-time student or any school furthering education beyond high school.
Amount: An award of $2500 is given to the student selected.
College Entrance Exams: Applicants will be required to take the SAT or ACT test. Students must have taken this examination no later than January of 2018.
Scholarship Essay: Approximately 400-500 words indicating why you should be the recipient of the award. Applications and additional information can beobtained online at www.nyspffa.org or by contacting Jacqueline Merveil, FDNY Registrar at 718-281-8465.

  • NYS Memorial Scholarship
In memory of the deceased Firefighters, Volunteer Firefighters, Police Officers, Peace Officers, and Emergency Medical Service Workers. Award covers tuition, room & board, and allowances for books, supplies, and transportation at CUNY or SUNY for up to 4 yrs. of full-time undergraduate study. Available for the children, spouses, and financial dependents of deceased firefighters, volunteer firefighters, police officers, peace officers, and emergency medical service workers who died in the line of duty in service to the State of New York.   • Tuttlemundo/Dolney Scholarship Fund
The Tuttlemundo / Dolney Scholarship Fund will award two $500 academic scholarships towards the college tuition of qualified children. To be eligible for consideration a child must be a dependent of a current or former member of Div 15, currently attending a college that imposes a charge for tuition, and entering a college in September that imposes a charge for tuition. Each dependent child must submit a separate application. The winners will be published on a future Department Order. Applications can be obtained from the FDNY Intranet or online at www.watkinsst.com. 3. September 11th Victim Scholarships

  • City of Berlin Scholarship

In response to the events of September 11, 2001, the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation (CCF) in Berlin, Germany initiated a charitable campaign entitled 'Berlin helps the USA' for children with parents who were either killed or whose health was permanently impaired due to the terrorist attacks. Since September 12, 2001, private donors in Berlin citizens all over Germany, have contributed money to this campaign. The scholarship covers a portion of tuition fees at the student's college or university. In addition, grantees have the exciting opportunity to take a partially funded trip to Berlin.

Applications are accepted throughout the year, but must be submitted at least 3 months before beginning of the semester for which funding is requested.

  • FF Michael Lynch Memorial Foundation Scholarship
Scholarships are available to children of FDNY members, victims of 9/11, and other fires and disasters in NYC. For more info, including applications, visit www.mlynch.org.

  • Needham September 11th Scholarship Fund
Available to children of FDNY members who died on September 11, 2001. For more info and applications visit www.needhamco.com.

  • NYS World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship
Available for the children, spouses, and financial dependents of victims who died or were severely and permanently disabled as a result of September 11, 2001 and the resulting rescue and recovery efforts. Award covers tuition, room & board, and allowances for books, supplies, and transportation at CUNY or SUNY for up to 4 yrs. of full-time undergraduate study. For an application visit www.hesc.com.

  • Charles H. Revson Fellows Program
Ten individuals of diverse backgrounds and fields of achievement are selected to pursue a nine-month program of their own design at Columbia University. For an application and more information, contact Ms. Jacqueline Merveil, FDNY Registrar in the Office of Fire & Life Safety, at 718-281-8465. The completed typed application with supporting documents must be sent to Ms. Merveil, for appropriate FDNY endorsement, Bureau of Training/ Fire and Life Safety Administrative Center, 401 Murray Avenue, Fort Totten, NY 11359.

  • E. Virgil Conway College Scholar Awards
Open to sons and daughters of New York City career civil service employees with at least two years of continuous city service. The maximum gross family income permitted is $100,000.   • Higher Education Scholarship Drawing
The Holy Name Society, Manhattan, Bronx and Staten Island, will hold a Higher Education Scholarship Drawing at the annual Communion Breakfast on April 29, 2018. The Higher Education Scholarships consist of two (2), $1500 awards, payable to any college or trade school of the winners' choice. Members must be in good standing in this society and the winners are in their twelfth year of education. Members must be present at the breakfast to win and have submitted an application. Completed applications must be returned by April 20, 2018, to be included in the drawing.

  • James B. Boylan Scholarship Award

  • Silver Shield College Award
The Silver Shield Foundation is honoring the service of uniformed members of the FDNY to the New York community by awarding one member's college-bound daughter or son - chosen by lottery - a college scholarship in the amount of $5000, renewable annually for up to four years. Eligibility: To be eligible, a student must be the natural or adopted child of an FDNY member currently serving as a Firefighter, Fire Officer EMT, Paramedic, EMS Officer, Wiper, Engineer, Pilot, Fire Marshal or Supervising Fire Marshal. Grandchildren and step-children are not eligible. The children of retirees, deceased members or civilians (including Fire Prevention) are not eligible. The student must have graduated from an accredited high school in the current year (2018) and be accepted at an accredited four-year college to matriculate in the summer or fall of 2018. Selection: The scholarship winner will be chosen by lottery. To be considered, the student should write:
- His/her first, middle and last name.
- Name of high school and graduation date.
- Name of college and start date.
- Name of FDNY parent on a piece of paper and sign the page.
The paper should be sealed in a plain white envelope with no address or markings. It should be enclosed in another envelope addressed to:

5. General College/University Info & Other Programs

  • FDNY Spring College Fair
For active and retired FDNY members and their families. Specific information may be found in Department Orders or by contacting Mary Elizabeth Rohan, 718-281-8464 or via email rohanm@fdny.nyc.gov.

  • IRC 529 Savings Plan (IRS Code)
It's an education savings plan named after Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code. The 529 Savings Plan was designed to help families set aside funds for future college costs. As long as the plan satisfies a few basic requirements, the federal tax law provides special tax benefits to you. For more info go to www.savingforcollege.com.

  • John Jay College Tuition Reimbursement Procedures
The Department is offering a tuition reimbursement plan for all uniformed members who are registered for courses at John Jay College. Any FDNY member currently enrolled at John Jay College should have completed the Notification of Registration form JJ-1 (available on the FDNY Intranet) to be eligible for consideration of tuition reimbursement. Members who filed form JJ-1 are required to submit the request for reimbursement form JJ-2 at the conclusion of the semester. The form and a copy of their transcript and proof of payment shall be forwarded to the FDNY College Advisor. The required documentation must be received by the deadline (January 15th for Fall semester, June 15th for Spring semester). No reimbursement requests will be accepted after these dates.

  • Student Loan Forgiveness Programs for Firefighters
