Scholarships for FDNY Members & Family


1. FDNY Organization Scholarships

Deadline for submission was Monday October 6th. UFA Treasurer Ed Brown anticipates the mailing of checks on /or around Mid-November. 2015 Application information will be posted here.

  • FDNY Columbia Association
Columbia Association awards High School & College students. Candidates may compete if a parent (natural, step or foster) is a member in good standing of the Columbia Association. Children of deceased members, who were in good standing at time of death, may also compete. Applications may be obtained online at www.fdnycolumbia.com.

  • FDNY Vikings Association
Available for family member of a member in good standing of the Vikings in a tuition paying H.S., college, technical school. Applications may be obtained online: www.fdnyvikings.org.

  • FDNY St. George Association Annual Scholarship Exam
Open to the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of FDNY St. George Association members in good standing. For info call Scholarship Chairman Harvey Modor at 718-465-6405.

  • FDNY Holy Name Society H.S. Scholarship
Available for Manhattan, Bronx, and Staten Island. The Holy Name Society always holds their H.S. Scholarship Test the first Saturday in December. Available to 8th graders, who are sons and daughters, brothers, sisters & grandchildren of Holy Name Society members in good standing (including deceased members).   • FDNY Emerald Society Annual Scholarship Exam
Open to sons and daughters, brothers and sisters of Emerald Society members in good standing. Always takes place the 1st Saturday in March. Application: www.fdnyemerald.com or Dispatcher William P. Treanor, 98 Bay Street, Bronx, NY 10464.

  • NY Firefighters Burn Center Foundation Educational Grant Awards
In memory of FF Michael Kiefer grant awards are being offered to active members of FDNY Uniformed Force. Submit info to: The New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation c/o Engine Co. 66 & Ladder Co. 61, 21 Asch Loop, Bronx, NY 10475. Note: On the envelope print the word "GRANT" on the lower left corner. For more info, including applications, go to www.nyffburncenter.com.

  • Fire Bell Club Scholarship Award Application
Applications are available for active FF's 5th Grade and above & Officers who have been accepted or are attending an accredited institution of higher learning. FFs/Officers who are pursuing a degree in Fire Service Administration, Public Service Management, Nursing or a related Fire Service discipline and who have completed a minimum of (12) credits are eligible. Preference will be given to members who have fewer than five years of service. Applications can be obtained from Ms. Jacqueline Merveil, FDNY Registrar, at (718) 281-8465. Two scholarships will be awarded.



2. Memorial Scholarships

  • NYS Memorial Scholarship
In memory of the deceased Firefighters, Volunteer Firefighters, Police Officers,Peace Officers, and Emergency Medical Service Workers. Award covers tuition, room & board, and allowances for books, supplies, and transportation at CUNY or SUNY for up to 4 yrs. of full-time undergraduate study. Available for the children, spouses, and financial dependents of deceased firefighters, volunteer firefighters, police officers, peace officers, and emergency medical service workers who died in the line of duty in service to the State of New York.   • A-Team Scholarship
In memory of Lt. Joseph Cavalieri, FF Christopher Bopp, and FF James Bohan the scholarship is open to any child of an active or retired member of the UFA or UFOA entering a private H.S.   • NYS Honorary Fire Chiefs & NYSPFF Memorial Scholarship
In memory of FF Ted Green, the NYS Honorary Fire Chiefs & NYS Professional Firefighter's Memorial College Scholarships are available. The scholarship is open to H.S. seniors & recent high school graduates who will not have completed more than one year of college. Applicants must be a child of an active uniformed union member of the NYS Professional Firefighter's Association. Applicants must have taken the SAT or ACT.   • FF Thomas Brick Memorial College Scholarships
In memory of FF Thomas Brick, scholarships are available to all active FDNY Firefighters & Officers. To apply, complete & return an application to Chief of Department Kilduff. Applications are available on the FDNY Intranet or by calling Katherine McGuire (718) 999-0743.

  • NY Firefighters Burn Center Foundation Educational Grant Awards
In memory of FF Michael Kiefer grant awards are being offered to active members of FDNY Uniformed Force.   • Lt. John M. Clancy/FF Jimmy O'Shea Memorial Scholarship
Only children of active FDNY members are eligible. All students must be taking a minimum of 12 credits at a college or university. For more info and applications contact Ret. FF Richard Berkhout, (631) 278-5021.

  • 2014 Tuttlemundo/Dolney Scholarship Fund
The Tuttlemundo / Dolney Scholarship Fund will award two $500 academic scholarships towards the college tuition of qualified children. To be eligible for consideration a child must be a dependent of a current or former member of Div 15, currently attending a college that imposes a charge for tuition, and entering a college in September that imposes a charge for tuition. Each dependent child must submit a separate application. The winners will be published on a future Department Order. Applications must be received by August 1st, 2014. Applications can be obtained from the FDNY Intranet or online at www.watkinsst.com. 3. September 11th Victim Scholarships

  • NYS World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship
Available for the children, spouses, and financial dependents of victims who died or were severely and permanently disabled as a result of September 11, 2001 and the resulting rescue and recovery efforts. Award covers tuition, room & board, and allowances for books, supplies, and transportation at CUNY or SUNY for up to 4 yrs. of full-time undergraduate study. For an application visit www.hesc.com/.

  • FF Michael Lynch Memorial Foundation Scholarship
Scholarships are available to children of FDNY members, victims of 9/11, and other fires and disasters in NYC. For more info, including applications, visit www.mlynch.org.

  • Needham September 11th Scholarship Fund
Available to children of FDNY members who died on September 11, 2001. For more info and applications visit www.needhamco.com.

  • Charles H. Revson Fellows Program
Ten individuals of diverse backgrounds and fields of achievement are selected to pursue a nine-month program of their own design at Columbia University. For an application and more information, contact Ms. Jacqueline Merveil, FDNY Registrar in the Office of Fire & Life Safety, at 718-281-8465. The completed typed application with supporting documents must be sent to Ms. Merveil, for appropriate FDNY endorsement, Bureau of Training/ Fire and Life Safety Administrative Center, 401 Murray Avenue, Fort Totten, NY 11359.

  • E. Virgil Conway College Scholar Awards
Open to sons and daughters of New York City career civil service employees with at least two years of continuous city service. The maximum gross family income permitted is $100,000. 5. General College/University Info & Other Programs

  • FDNY Spring College Fair
For active and retired FDNY members and their families. Specific information may be found in Department Orders or by contacting Mary Elizabeth Rohan, 718-281-8464 or via email rohanm@fdny.nyc.gov.

  • John Jay College Tuition Reimbursement Procedures
The Department is offering a tuition reimbursement plan for all uniformed members who are registered for courses at John Jay College. Any FDNY member currently enrolled at John Jay College should have completed the Notification of Registration form JJ-1 (available on the FDNY Intranet) to be eligible for consideration of tuition reimbursement. Members who filed form JJ-1 are required to submit the request for reimbursement form JJ-2 at the conclusion of the semester. The form and a copy of their transcript and proof of payment shall be forwarded to the FDNY College Advisor. The required documentation must be received by the deadline (January 15th for Fall semester, June 15th for Spring semester). No reimbursement requests will be accepted after these dates.

  • IRC 529 Savings Plan (IRS Code)
It's an education savings plan named after Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code. The 529 Savings Plan was designed to help families set aside funds for future college costs. As long as the plan satisfies a few basic requirements, the federal tax law provides special tax benefits to you. For more info go to www.savingforcollege.com.

  • Student Loan Forgiveness Programs for Firefighters
These programs offer benefits in the short and long-term to aid Firefighters at various points throughout the loan repayment process. http://www.iaff.org.
