Eight Firemen Receive Special Scholarship Awards

NY 1 - December 24, 2010

Eight members of the New York City Fire Department received special honors in Downtown Brooklyn on Thursday.

The New York State Honorary Fire Chiefs Association presented their fourth annual scholarship awards to the eight members at a ceremony at FDNY headquarters.

The $2,500 scholarships are awarded to members of the Department who are currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program and have goals of enhancing their value to the FDNY through education.

Recipients said they were thrilled with the honor.

"The scholarship lets a lot of us go to college. There's no way we would be able to afford it without the generosity of these groups," said Lieutenant Thomas Healy, a scholarship recipient.

"Getting the scholarship this time of year has been huge. I couldn't ask for a bigger gift. I don't need to open anything under the tree this year, this will suffice," said Lieutenant Anthony Pasquin, another recipient.

Recipients of the award were chosen through a rigorous selection progress, while the number of scholarships awarded doubled from last year.
