Firefighters tackled the blaze for two hours from the roof after the flames spread from the second floor and up a shaftway.
FOX 5 News reporter Carolyn Gusoff was on the scene where firefighters were working the flames inside the five-story building.
"It went into the space above the top ceiling. We had to cut holes through the roof," an FDNY official said about the fast-moving flames.
Four residents suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to the FDNY.
Displaced residents were being housed by the American Red Cross.
