S.I. House Fire Leaves 10 Firefighters Hospitalized

NY 1 - November 22, 2010

Several firefighters were injured after battling a house fire on Staten Island.

The fire happened just before 11:30 p.m. Friday at a home on Westervelt Avenue in St. George.

Fire officials said no one was home at the time, and that two dogs inside managed to escape.

Neighbors said moments after they spotted the fire, it quickly spread to part of their home.

"The windows were just orange, aglow," said one neighbor. "The firefighters were here in a minute or two, but it still wasn't fast enough. Literally 60 seconds after I hit the street, they were here, but they couldn't stop the fire. It spread that fast."

Officials said 10 firefighters were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and other injuries.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation late Saturday.
