FDNY Promotes New Chief of Department

NEW YORK (AP) - The Fire Department of New York on Thursday named a new chief of department, the highest uniformed position.

Edward Kilduff fills the vacancy left by Salvatore Cassano, who is now the commissioner. Kilduff has been with the FDNY for 32 years and served as Brooklyn Borough Commander since 2004.

Cassano says he's looking forward to working with Kilduff through a difficult time at the. The fire department is facing major cuts as the Mayor tightens the budget and some firehouses may close.

Thomas Galvin was promoted to Chief-in-charge of Training and Thomas Jensen to Chief-in-charge of Fire Prevention.

The Fire Department has 11,400 firefighters.
