NY Times - July 20, 2009A 4-year-old boy died after being trapped when a two-story house in St. Albans, Queens, caught fire on Sunday afternoon, a Fire Department spokesman said.
Firefighters crawled through the smoke to reach the boy, who was identified by the police as Mekhi Fingal. The firefighters carried him outside the burning building, at 111-43 169th Street, and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Mekhi was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and was pronounced dead, the Fire Department spokesman said.
The fire was reported at 5:40 p.m. and was brought under control within 30 minutes, the spokesman said. Everyone else who lived in the house had escaped before firefighters arrived.
Another child who lived in the building had minor injuries but refused treatment, the Fire Department spokesman said. It was not immediately clear where in the building the fire began, the spokesman said.
