Three-Alarm Fire Kills Two In Brooklyn

NY 1 - July 13, 2009

Two men are dead after a massive fire swept through a house in Brooklyn early Sunday morning.

It happened around 5 a.m. on Avenue K in East Flatbush.

Fire officials have not yet released the identity of the victims.

One witness says he saw a man standing in a second floor window of the house. He says he urged the man to jump, but he disappeared back into the house.

"We tried to knock down the door and it's just smoke, just pushed us back out. And then the flames came and we ran out to the street. We couldn't save him. We tried," said East Flatbush resident Michael Rogers.

"When we got on the scene it was heavy fire on the first floor, the second floor, up through the attack area, the fire extending to the buildings to the left and to the right," said FDNY Assistant Chief Thomas Galvin.

Witnesses also say they heard a woman screaming from inside the house. Fire officials say they searched the house and found no other victims.

Nine firefighters suffered minor injuries, including one who was treated for burns.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
