Firefighters rescued an elderly couple after flames engulfed their Brooklyn apartment last night.

The blaze broke out in the couples sixth-floor apartment on Brighton Third Street near Neptune Avenue, in Brighton Beach shortly after 10:30 p.m. Monday, officials said.

Smoke was pouring out the window when firefighters arrived, according Captain Bill Gallagher of Ladder Co. 169

Firefighters tried to force open the front door open and after initially struggling to get inside, Firefighter Joseph Roggenkamp finally made his way inside and found a 62-year-old man unconscious and slumped against the front door. Roggenkamp dragged him to safety in the hallway.

While searching the apartment, Capt. Gallagher and Firefighter Dan Saalfrank found a 72-year-old woman, lying on the bed in a rear bedroom and they carried her to safety.
