Restaurant Fire Damages Manhattan Apartments

NY 1

A two-alarm fire broke out in a Manhattan restaurant Tuesday morning and tore through an apartment building.

Plumes of smoke greeted firefighters as they arrived at 706 Amsterdam Avenue in the Upper West just after 7 a.m.

Nearly 75 firefighters battled the blaze for about an hour before it died down.

"When the men arrived we had a heavy, heavy fire and smoke condition in the store. We had civilians self-evacuating," said FDNY Deputy Chief Anthony Devita.

One victim suffered from minor injuries.

Officials blame careless cooking for the fire, which started in a first-floor Chinese restaurant.

The Fire Department is still investigating.
