Fire Blazes In Inwood Apartments

NY 1

A three alarm-fire broke out in a six-story apartment building in Inwood Friday afternoon.

Firefighters were able to put the blaze out in about an hour, at 3:30 p.m. One civilian and 12 firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Residents made it out safely, but they say the building has no fire alarms.

"There was no alarm, no nothing. It was dark in the hallway. You know, that was crazy. Thank god because we had time to get out," said resident Javier Amaro.

"Now I'm really scared, because now that there's no alarms in the hallway, anything, I'm afraid to go back into that building," said resident Carolyne Amaro. "And to live there, in case of an emergency like what happened today, there is no way we can alarm ourselves."

Firefighters say the blaze was contained to the first floor.
