Retired FDNY Lt. Pudgie Walsh was a happy camper when he phoned Mighty last week: "We beat the cops! We beat the cops!"
News item: The FDNY beat the NYPD, 17-15, a week ago Sunday at Hofstra before 5,000 fans.
"What a game, Mighty. The FDNY bolted out to a 14-0 lead, fell behind, 15-14, then won on a late field goal."
Pudgie had another reason to call. "The Brooklyn Mariners are holding their annual golf tournament (pitch and putt) at Riis Park on Friday, 9:30 a.m. The party follows at Buckley's in Marine Park, 2-6 p.m."
This is Pudgie's 52nd season as Mariners head football coach.
Mighty had one question. "Pitch and putt?"
"Yeah, Mighty, we figuring a larger turnout with the pitch and putt, as opposed to six grueling hours of real golf. We want everyone relaxed for the party at Buckley's."
Mighty wasn't buying: "Yeah sure, but I know the Brooklyn style of pitch and putt," Mighty told Pudgie. "You putt, followed by a pitcher (of beer)."

Mighty hit with the Reds Monday night. Tuesday it's the Lakers.
The surplus is five sirignanos.
