Partial Derailment Disrupts Subway

NY Times

Two cars on an N subway train partly derailed in Midtown Manhattan on Sunday afternoon, city and transit officials said. They said that no one was hurt.

Service disruptions on the N and R lines extended into early Monday, but New York City Transit said it hoped to restore normal service by the morning rush.

The accident involved a Brooklyn-bound train that was about 100 feet from the Seventh Avenue station, where the train was arriving at a relatively slow speed about 4:30 p.m., officials said.

One wheel on each of two cars lifted off the rail, and the train came to a stop, according to a transit agency spokeswoman, Deirdre Parker.

The cause of the derailment was unknown, and safety inspectors were sent to investigate, Ms. Parker said.

Firefighters evacuated about 400 passengers and crew members from the train in about an hour, officials said. William Chilson, chief of the Eighth Battalion, said that the Fire Department was not called until 5:05 p.m., but that it completed the evacuation about 5:30.

Some trains were rerouted.
