Gas leak at Queens Catering Hall Sickens 42 People, 2 Seriously

Associated Press

A gas leak at a New York catering hall has sickened at least 42 people.

Firefighters say more than 20 have been hospitalized and two are in serious condition.

The Dante Caterers banquet hall in Queens had about 200 people in it Sunday night when a woman reported feeling ill and passed out. Other guests called 911.

Firefighters have evacuated the two-story building in the East Elmhurst neighborhood. They say it looks as though the odorless and colorless gas carbon monoxide was leaking from a drying machine in the basement. They've shut off the machine and turned on fans to air out the hall. They're still investigating.

Dante Caterers is a full-service banquet facility with four ballrooms that can accommodate up to 400 guests. No one at the hall has returned a telephone message seeking comment on the incident.
