NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A three-alarm fire at a Manhattan high-rise has left several people hospitalized Thursday night.

The flames erupted from the third floor of the 26-story apartment building at 460 Grand Street on the Lower East Side around 7:30 p.m.

Fire officials said 12 civilians were hurt in the fire. Two people were seriously hurt and one person was critically injured. Eleven firefighters suffered minor injuries. Most of the injuries were from smoke inhalation.

Deputy Fire Chief James Daly said some of the victims were trying to escape the building by taking the elevator which he said opened on the floor where the fire started.

Officials said they were able to contain the fire to the third floor.

Building residents say the smoke was thick and black.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
