Associated Press

(AP) - A fire at a high-rise apartment building on Manhattan's Lower East Side has left two people with life-threatening injuries. Fifteen others also have been hurt.

The Fire Department of New York says two civilians have been hospitalized with severe injuries. Six more civilians and nine firefighters have suffered less serious injuries.

The blaze broke out Thursday evening in a 26-story apartment building on Grand Street near Pitt Street. The three-alarm fire started on the fourth floor.

Building residents say the smoke was thick and black.

Firefighters are investigating the cause of the blaze.
