NEW YORK (AP) -- Authorities say a smoky fire forced a brief evacuation of a Manhattan homeless shelter and sent three people to a hospital with minor injuries.
It's not clear what started the fire shortly before midnight Wednesday at the city-run 30th Street Intake facility. It's a first stop for homeless men seeking shelter, and some stay there.
City Department of Homeless Services spokeswoman Linda Bazerjian said the building was evacuated for about an hour after smoke appeared in the basement. She wasn't certain how many people were at the shelter.
The Fire Department said two firefighters and one civilian were taken to nearby Bellevue Hospital.
The homeless center is on Bellevue's grounds, but hospital staffers say Bellevue wasn't affected by the blaze.
