CORONA, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- Police say a 5-year-old boy left home alone by his older brother has died in a fire in their Queens apartment. The 24-year-old brother has been arrested.
The New York Police Department says Diego Guallpa was supposed to be baby-sitting Jason Guallpa while their parents were out but left the first-floor apartment and returned to a blaze in the building. He has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Fire officials said the boy was found dead in a bedroom behind a television covered in debris in the first floor apartment of the 2-story apartment building on 98th Street in Corona.
The building housed a restaurant on the first floor, with an apartment in the back and second floor.
The fast moving fire, which spread through both apartments, was reported at 10:40 a.m. and was under control within 40 minutes, officials said.
At least two other people were injured and three firefighters suffered minor injuries.
Officials believe the fire started in the kitchen of the first floor apartment and that the boy was left home alone.
The investigation is ongoing.
