A 67-year-old woman was seriously burned in a fire that broke out early Tuesday in the fourth floor East Village apartment building where she lives.

Wendy Schonfeld's face was scorched in the 2 a.m. blaze at 335 E. Fifth St., neighbors and firefighters said. She was treated at Beth Israel Hospital. About a dozen other building residents were also forced into the bitter cold.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
