FDNY Saves Critically Hurt Girl, 3, From Burning Home

Newsday

The Fire Department says a badly burned toddler was rescued from a brownstone fire after firefighters crawled underneath leaping flames to get to her.

It's unclear whether anyone else was in the Brooklyn home during the fire Thursday evening. The 3-year-old has been hospitalized in critical condition, with burns covering about 70 percent of her body. Her name has not been released.

Firefighter Tim Heaton says the girl was conscious and crying when Lt. Mark Gregory and firefighter John Norman found her in a back bedroom of the house on Stuyvesant Avenue, in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area. Heaton says the two had to slip beneath flames that were spurting into a hallway to reach the girl.
