FDNY: Staten Island Fire Blamed on Extension Cord

NEW YORK (AP) -- A fire that left a 9-year-old boy dead on Staten Island is being blamed on a malfunctioning extension cord.

Fire Department spokesman James Long says the cord was attached to the basement ceiling of the home in the Prince's Bay section.

Monsignor Edmund Whalen, the pastor of Saint Joseph-Saint Thomas Parish, where Thomas Monahan Jr . attended elementary school, said he was a happy child who loved nature.

Thomas was pronounced dead Monday morning at Staten Island University hospital. Neighbors say the boy's father tried to rescue him from the burning home but was blocked by flames.

The boy's parents and sister escaped the home at 49 Princewood Avenue unharmed. Fire marshals are investigating the cause of the house fire.
