Man Is Killed in SoHo Fire

NY Times

A Manhattan man died early Saturday when a fire swept through his apartment in SoHo, the authorities said.

The fire was confined to the rear of the third floor at 146 Sullivan Street, between West Houston and Prince Streets, officials said.

Neighbors identified the man as Richard Seidel and said that he was in his mid-60s. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured.

Firefighters, responding to a 911 call from a downstairs neighbor of Mr. Seidel’s, arrived at 2:07 a.m. and had the fire under control by 2:42 a.m., officials said. The cause was under investigation on Saturday.

Neighbors said that Mr. Seidel had lived alone in the six-story rental building for more than 20 years, but that they knew little about him.
