'Shanty' Fire Kills Homeless Man In Queens

NY 1

The Fire Department is still investigating a fire this morning in a makeshift shelter in Queens that left a man dead and another person critically hurt.

Investigators say the flames broke out at Hillside Avenue and 175th Street in Jamaica shortly before 4 a.m.

They say the fire started on a fence and jumped to a shanty where a group of homeless people were sleeping, trying to stay warm.

Those inside managed to escape, except for one man who didn't get out in time and died.
