7 Hurt, 1 Critically, in Sunnyside Gas Explosion

Fire officials say a gas leak caused an explosion at a three-story residential building in Queens yesterday that injured at least seven people, one critically.

Firefighters responded to calls at 40-19 41st St. in Sunnyside around 4:30 p.m. Fire Department officials said the area had been evacuated and crews were working to uncover the source of the leak. One woman was taken to Manhattan's NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/ Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition.

A spokesman for Con Edison said crews are investigating. He wasn't sure if the gas in the area had been turned off, but said crews were "making the area safe."
