Bronx: Firefighter Injured in Fall

A firefighter was hurt yesterday afternoon when he fell from an aerial bucket while battling a blaze in an apartment in Highbridge, the Fire Department said.

The firefighter, Brian Smith, 43, was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition. One apartment resident was also injured in the fire, neighbors said.

The fire was on the second floor of a six-story building on Shakespeare Avenue. Melissa Gonzales, who lives above the apartment that was on fire, said she believed that Firefighter Smith was trying to break a window on her floor to gain access.

A bystander's video of the accident shows two firefighters in the bucket, and one falling.
