The FDNY and two city fire unions engaged in a war of words yesterday over allegations that the Fire Department was stonewalling the investigation into the deadly fire at the Deutsche Bank building.
Uniformed Fire Association President Steve Cassidy and Uniformed Fire Officers Association boss John McDonnell slammed the FDNY for allegedly ordering officers to cease communicating about the Aug. 18 fire over e-mail.
"They are clearly trying to cover something up," McDonnell said. "They don't want there to be records for the Manhattan [district attorney] to subpoena."
Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta, who received a strong vote of confidence from Mayor Bloomberg yesterday, denied the accusations. "That is absolute nonsense," said Scoppetta after he announced that homeland security had donated $900,000 to the FDNY for fire prevention education.
